Fabrication dry and modified starch, dextrins, sago

Contents - Previous - Next. The flour produced from the cassava plant, which on account of its low content of noncarbohydrate constituents might well be called a starch, is known in world trade as tapioca flour. It is used directly, made into a group of baked or gelatinized products or manufactured into glucose, dextrins and other products. Starchy foods have always been one of the staples of the human diet.

Acid Modification of Sago Hampas for Industrial Purposes

Starch , a white, granular, organic chemical that is produced by all green plants. Starch is a soft, white, tasteless powder that is insoluble in cold water , alcohol, or other solvents. The basic chemical formula of the starch molecule is C 6 H 10 O 5 n.

The simplest form of starch is the linear polymer amylose; amylopectin is the branched form. Starch is manufactured in the green leaves of plants from excess glucose produced during photosynthesis and serves the plant as a reserve food supply. Starch is stored in chloroplasts in the form of granules and in such organs as the roots of the tapioca plant; the tuber of the potato; the stem pith of sago; and the seeds of corn , wheat , and rice.

When required, starch is broken down, in the presence of certain enzymes and water, into its constituent monomer glucose units, which diffuse from the cell to nourish the plant tissues.

In humans and other animals, starch is broken down into its constituent sugar molecules, which then supply energy to the tissues. Most commercial starch is made from corn, although wheat, tapioca, and potato starch are also used. Commercial starch is obtained by crushing or grinding starch-containing tubers or seeds and then mixing the pulp with water; the resulting paste is freed of its remaining impurities and then dried.

Aside from their basic nutritional uses, starches are used in brewing and as thickening agents in baked goods and confections. Starch is used in paper manufacturing to increase the strength of paper and is also used in the surface sizing of paper. Starch is used in the manufacture of corrugated paperboard, paper bags and boxes, and gummed paper and tape.

Large quantities of starch are also used in the textile industry as warp sizing, which imparts strength to the thread during weaving. Article Media. Info Print Cite. Submit Feedback. Starch synthesis in plants occurs by an analogous pathway catalyzed by amylose synthetase; ADP-glucose rather than UDP-glucose is the preferred glucose donor [79a]. Similarly, cellulose, the major structural polysaccharide in plant cell walls, is synthesized in some plants by reaction [79a]; other plants undergo analogous….

Starch or amylum is a polymeric carbohydrate consisting of numerous glucose units joined by glycosidic bonds. This polysaccharide is produced by most green plants as energy storage. It is the most common carbohydrate in human diets and is contained in large amounts in staple foods like potatoes , wheat , maize corn , rice , and cassava.

One of the primary objects of the invention is to provide a method of modifying or converting starches which will be more economical and which will give products with more desirable characteristics than the methods heretofore used; and which, moreover, will make it possible to obtain more accurately and with greater cer- M tainty the particular qualities or groups of qualities desired in any particular product. Another object is to provide a method of purifying low grade starches, such for example as sago starch or low grade tapioca starch, so that 2g; these relatively inferior and cheap starches may be used for the production of modified starches, dextrines or gums of first class quality and a further saving made in the cost of manufacture of such products.

Sago Palm pp Cite as. Sago pith and sago hampas mainly consist of starch and fiber. In this research, acid modification of starch and fiber was conducted by high-temperature autoclaving and microwave-assisted treatments and slow or mild acid hydrolysis. Autoclaving and microwave-assisted treatments influenced the gelatinization and solubilization of starch granules to produce depolymerized starch and changed the fiber structure to become more amorphous forms.

This invention relates to new and improved amylaceous compositions, more particularly new and improved film-forming compositions, which have adhesive properties, and a process for the preparation thereof. The invention further relates to dry base compositions which upon the addition of water give film-forming compositions. This application is a continuation-in-part of my co-pending application Serial No. In my co-pending application various compositions were described and a number of examples of the preparation of such compositions were given containing all types of amylaceous materials, including undegenerated and degenerated or modified starches and dextrins. The 'undegenerated starches and some of the degenerated or modified starches ar practically insoluble or only slightly dispersible in water at ordinary temperatures and pressures.
